Surf Camp

Perhaps the first of its kind in South Africa in terms of an actual fully-fledged “Surf Camp”.It boosts its own shaping and glassing bay where you can shape your own board, has an Informal conference area with beach sand as the flooring, where you can watch surfing and footage of your surfing on a big screen. The Hosts of The Secret Spot Surf Camp who are Rozz andMike Smith have created a unique African/Beach/Safari setting, especially for surfers and peoplewanting to learn 2 surf . The Secret Spot Facilitates, high performance and specialty courses like judging, Coaching and tow-in's surfing too.

A chef has a breakfast menu, pub lunch menu and Portuguese and South African dishes while self-catering facilities are also available, especially after a long day on beach for individuals or groups, its great to have it all done for you.

Ideally and strategically positioned for International visitors who can enjoy a wide cross section of African Zulu culture, wild life Zuluand surfing in the form of packages .

The facility caters for individuals, families, groups, Clubs; surf brand labels, Provincial surfing teams and has hosted the National surfing team, already on 4 separate occasions, making it an approved facility by the National administration SSA.

It is also a great venue for business and corporate team building that offers “informal” conferencing with all the formal conferencing tools, …………………………………. and some surfing thrown in too.

In addition to the services already listed, The Secret Spot has an airport and beach shuttle service, video and still picture capture and editing for you at the facility by pre arrangement. This means that coaches can get on with the job while the staff of the Secret Spot can look after all the transport, food, accommodation, conferencing and entertainment needs of the group.

So whether it's a breakaway, team-building getaway for clubs, Provincial teams, National teams, Brand manufacturers and/ or a structured surfing or sporting team camp, The Secret Spot is the place to do it. We also support all sporting discipline who wish to use our unique facility, weather you wish to surf or not. Mike is also the KZN Agent for Silicon Coach Pro a sport video analysis program, which is available for technical coaching and analysis in any sporting discipline.

Conferences

The Secret Spot Surf Camp has set up a unique “informal” conference room; it has beach sand as the flooring, beautiful wooden benches with white table linen and all the necessary conferencing tools too. A data projector that links to a laptop for PowerPoint presentations, flip charts, white board, and also a podium while online ADSL, DSTV, video, and DVD can also be connected and viewed on our “Big Screen”.

You may do your own thing or we can also get involved and add value to your conference too!!

Ever wanted to Learn 2 surf? …………………… or improve your surfing too?

Well at this facility you can! ……. Just as a break from the conferencing routine, how about that!

The coaches are fully qualified and accredited, while the facility is also an approved facility by the National surfing body SSA (Surfing South Africa).

No better way to enjoy yourself while getting some work done, and doing a little “Team Building” with the staff and collogues of you business. The best is that it's cheap and affordable too.

We can even shape you a surfboard with your company logo decaled on to hang in your reception area for staff and collogues to remember the business that was done, and/or a DVD of the experience.

Silicon Coach Pro

Silicon coach Pro is a powerful sports video analysis program that allows you to capture footage of athletes, and be viewed on a dual screen for comparison and analysis. It has a wide range of tools that assists the coach to illustrate technique, style, correction and examples that can be easily communicated via video. The footage and comparisons may be captured to DVD so the athlete can be monitored over time, and also allows the athlete to view on an ongoing basis.

Videos capture, analysis and editing:

The Secret Spot offers video and still picture capture, and editing facilities, so you can have your own mini DVD of your camp, conference or courses. We are also the KZN Agent for a sport video analysis program called Silicon Coach Pro. A big screen is available to view and analyze your video and still picture footage in our “informal conference room that has beach sand as the flooring.

Professional coaches and service providers:

If your group requires extra specialized coaching and service providers, The Secret Spot is in contact with a library of Biokenetikists, sport physiologists, technical coaches and strategic coaches as outside service providers too for you to utilize that can be pre-arranged.

DIY Surfboards ( In-House Shaping and Glassing Bay)

For those who want to shape their own board under the capable guidance and assistance of either Dyllan or Mike, it's an experience of a lifetime. Many surfers want to give it a bash o shape there own surfboard, however its always a “secret” the Secret Spot provides you this great opportunity.

From an athletes point of view it's a great opportunity to learn all the different elements of a surfboard and understand more about the dynamics of the rocker, foil, rails outline, fine placements, tails and different dimensions.

You start off by watching a video on Shaping and Glassing, and then you design and make your own board from start to finish including the laminating glassing, sanding finishing and spraying. You can also do repairs or have repairs done on site too.

It costs approx. R1900.00 – R2500.00 for a new custom board.

Things to do

In addition to a host of activities in and out of the establishment, we also have items and boards For Hire too.

Free Internet, volleyball, table tennis, pool table, board games, videos, movies, tours and lots of outside activities in the area too, like quad biking, horse riding, a golf course just over the road and much more. The Natal Sharks Board, a shark research centre, which is one of the most famous in the world is 15 minutes away, as is a scuba dive site and deep sea fishing is also available there too. Maybe an African camp fire at night, beach camp fire or sunset booze cruise in our open Land Rover tickles your fancy.

Learn 2 Surf

We have 3 programs for our learn 2 surf, they are single or multiple hour lessons depending on your budget and your desire to learn, and we also do two comprehensive learn 2 surf packages a 3 day and a 5 day course.

The courses include notes and lectures on Ocean safety, rips, tide and currents, surfing etiquette, surfing culture, history and the surfing museum, surfboard construction, a visit to the sharks board, a half day at the standing wave at the wave house, and not forgetting the actual surfing too. ……. Its great fun!!

Our three day course is simply a few less activities and lectures like the 5 day course, as a result of the time constraints, it however is also very comprehensive and gives an individual a good introduction into surfing, provides for the safety aspects and generally enough time for them to get up and learn 2 ride a wave.

  Wild Life game

The Secret Spot offers Wildlife Game reserve tours from our facility as a result of the logistic positioning the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal offers. Excellent wild life game Reserves are in close proximity, such as Hluhluwe, Umfolozi and the St.Lucia wetland areas.

Zulu Culture

KwaZulu Natal as the name suggests is home to the Zulu People, the biggest and most famous tribe in Africa , who continue to practice some tradition. Again The Secret Spot offers on sale both internal and external tours by professional service providers on Zulu Culture. We do our own thing by “spontaneous” actions, like having a beer in a shabeen (African bar), visit a songoma (African Herbal Doctor or Witch Doctor), and we have an apartheid museum of the late Chief Albert Luthuli very close by. We mix with the locals and you can chat with them, with the help of Bongani Xulu who is a Zulu and speaks English well. Bongi is part of our family at the Secret Spot and everyone loves him. We offer some local surfing safari tours where we take you to a range of surf spots in our African safari land rover and do a little “Bundu bashing” sometimes, it is simply a mini surfing safari, along the North and South Coasts of Durban including Durban and the piers. Local surf safari

Learn 2 Surf Africa 3 months program

This is done with a U.K. base company Ticket to Ride, who has a program that starts in Cape Town

And ends at The Secret Spot where you can also have he choice of completing a Lifeguards course and

A qualified level 2 coaching course. The trip takes you along the east coast of South Africa at most of the

Famous surf spots including Jeffrey's Bay, and you also get involved with community based projects with

This trip is done with one of our hottest local surfers on the North Coast “Syd Bollinger”, who takes you on an African Surfing Safari along the beautiful Dolphin Coast and onto Mozambique .

Surf Club

Every weekend and in particular Friday nights and Sunday mornings is our Surf club at The Secret Spot, “The Secret Surfers”, the club is made up of local young kids aged from 6 years old, and there families who are learning to surf, getting into the whole “surf vibe” and also improving there surfing skills. On Friday evenings the families gather and we give the kids lectures, notes, videos and footage in our conference area on surfing and the ocean.

Mike was past Chairman of KZNSA, KwaZulu Natal's Provincial surfing body. Roslynne, Mike's wife has also been very involved with the youth and surfing administration. Tammy – Lee there daughter is a professional surfer, surfing on the world tour (WQS) has numerous South African surfing Titles, Bongani, Mike and Rozz's “adopted son is a Top surfing judge and has started traveling the World judging surfing events. So the combined eam has lots to offer!!!
